DouWere releases Stapled 1.0 for Mac OS X
DouWere, s.p.r.l. has introduced Stapled 1.0, the first public version of an original utility for Mac OS X. It lets anyone you share their artistic creations. Wherever you put this picture, you also put the original document. You can open any document with the application, and it creates a new document — literally a picture — rendering a preview of the original document. However, it also embeds the original document, at its full quality. When you re-open a picture created by Stapled (or a copy of it) into the application, it will re-create the original document. The original document has been "unstapled" from the picture. Stapled requires OS X 10.7 or later. It's worldwide through the Mac App Store in the Utilities category. It's free. Apple makes its case to dismiss its court-appointed monitor
On Tuesday Apple had its case heard before the Second US Circuit Court of Appeals in New York, NY to cease e-book antitrust monitor Michael Bromwich's efforts permanently, reports "electronista" (http://tinyurl.com/kbvm65d). The Cupertino-based company argues that Bromwich's efforts are excessive, the man lacks the knowledge to properly oversee Apple, and fees and duties for the monitoring in addition to any court-ordered payments would cost millions of dollars, all of which will cause irreparable harm to Apple's business and relationships. In its court filings, Apple noted that Bromwich required a second lawyer with actual experience in antitrust issues at US$1,025 per hour to assist him. Bromwich demanded an $1,100 per hour rate for himself in addition to a 15% administrative fee to his consulting firm. During his first two weeks on the case, Bromwich billed Apple over $138,000.

Apple, Samsung headed to court (again) on March 31
Unless Apple and Samsung reach an agreement on "anti-cloning" and other key terms of a patent cross-license agreement, an outcome, they'll start another legal battle at the San Jose federal courthouse March 31, when their second two-way lawsuit (in which the parties originally asserted eight patents each) will go to trial, reports "FOSS Patents" (http://tinyurl.com/m6wsw4g). The parties notified the court and each other of their final narrowing proposals. In April 2013, Judge Lucy Koh, the federal judge presiding over their two California litigations, had ordered a narrowing of the case in several steps so as to limit the number of patents and products the jury will have to look at, Florian Mueller writes for "FOSS Patents." This is all part of the ongoing, global legal battle. Apple and Samsung have filed more than 30 lawsuits against each other across four continents. For example, Apple alleges that Samsung copied the slide-to-unlock technology of its iPhone and iPad devices.
