Microsoft Office comes to the iPad
Microsoft has announced Microsoft Office for the iPad. They're free downloads at the Apple App Store — IF you have an Office 365 account. Such subscribers — and more on Office 365, in a moment — can add an iPad as one of their selected devices included in the subscription benefits. Once done, they can use Word, PowerPoint, and Excel for the Apple tablet. Microsoft says that Office for iPad brings full file fidelity across Office on PC, Mac, tablet and phone. WD introduces Thunderbolt-powered, portable dual drive
Western Digital (WD) has unveiled the My Passport Pro. The company says it's the first portable, Thunderbolt-powered, dual drive solution. It sports user-selectable RAID functionality without the need for power adapters or cables. My Passport Pro is available in 2TB or 4TB models with prices of, respectively, US$299.99 and $429.99. Directly powered by the integrated Thunderbolt cable, the drive clocks in at speeds u to 233 MB/second. GX Gaming has launched the US$99 Zabius gaming headset in North America. It's compatible with Mac, PC, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3. The Zabius sports 40mm drivers and a 10-foot long anti-tangle cable. DEVONtechnologies revs all versions of DEVONthink, DEVONnote
 DEVONtechnologies has updated all editions of its information and document manager DEVONthink as well as its smart notebook app DEVONnote and bumps their version number to 2.7.4. The update brings interface, usability, and performance enhancements as well as bug fixes. The upgrades are free and recommended for all users. All editions of DEVONthink also allow you to annotate PDFs with lines and arrows. Creation date and user name are automatically added to new annotations. If you need to share documents with friends by email, AirMail is now supported, too. Importing notebooks from Evernote skips already imported items. LiveCode 6.6 ships with Scaling and High DPI support on desktops
RunRev says LiveCode 6.6, an update of the cross platform app development environment, is now available. The release brings automatic scaling and handling of Retina display screens to desktops. It also adds open SSL and encryption support for mobile platforms. Additionally, a new assert command has been implemented to help folks who write tests. Cocktail 7.3 (Mavericks Edition) can now clear Icon Services...
Maintain has served up Cocktail 7.3 (Mavericks Edition). It's a maintenance release of the utility that lets users clean, repair and optimize their Macs. Version 7.3 adds the ability to clear Icon Services caches and saved application states. It also adds an "Allow power button to put the computer to sleep" setting and an Utilities menu that offers quick access to miscellaneous utilities and assistants. Remote FileMaker 13 Training Series course set for May
FileMaker authors John Mark Osborne and Steven Blackwell will teach the FileMaker Training Series for FileMaker Pro 13 remotely in May. They say that remote classes offer students the same benefits of a traditional classes like asking questions and in-class exercises but without the cost of travel and time away from work. The FileMaker Training Series (FTS) is the official training curriculum from FileMaker, Inc. BlinkMail, a new app form Yam Labs, has launched as a free download for Mac OS X. The app allows you to go through your in-box using only your keyboard's arrow keys. Just open your email client and you can customize the arrows to do whatever your want. You can set an arrow to delete the mail, archive it, reply to it, send it instantly to Evernote, shoot it over to Dropbox, place a label on the message, and more. Sonnet announces new rackmount enclosure for the 2013 Mac Pro
Sonnet Technologies has announced the xMac Pro Server Thunderbolt 2-to-PCI Express (PCIe) expansion system and 4U rackmount enclosure for the 2013 Mac Pro. JAMF Software updates Casper Suite to version 9.3
JAMF Software has revved Casper Suite, its management tool for large-scale enterprise deployments of Apple products, to version 9.3. The app is designed to allow organizations set up Macs, iPads, and iPhones without IT having to touch the devices.

Fragmentation remains an issue for Android developers
A high degree of fragmentation is a problem that Android app developers have had to deal with since day one. KitKat, the latest iteration of Google's dessert-themed Android updates was supposed to change that. It was designed to be more compatible with low-end devices in order to get it to more devices more quickly. Thus far, it doesn't seem to have worked though: according to Mixpanel less than 10% of Android devices are currently running KitKat, which was released in October 2013. By contrast, iOS 7, released in late September has been adopted by 85% of iOS users and even iOS 7.1, released as late as March, has a significantly higher adoption rate (42.77%) than Android KitKat. ExactCODE has released ExactScan Pro 2 for Mac OS X
ExactCODE has released ExactScan Pro 2, an update of its scan software for Mac OS X. It sports a new driver, architecture optimizations, improved recognition of various texts, and higher PDF compression. For example, there are built-in drivers for scanners from Canon and Fujitsu such as the Canon G-1100 and G-1130. The built-in OCR software in ExactScan Pro 2 can recognize the text in images and transform scans into editable, searchable documents.

Parallels survey: Macs now considered for broader corporate...
Parallels, which specializes in cross-platform solutions, has announced results of its commissioned survey of more than 200 IT decision makers about their attitudes toward Macs in the enterprise. The results are telling: almost half of businesses (45%) currently offer their employees Macs, and more than nine out of 10 businesses (95%) that don’t currently provide Macs would be more likely to offer employees Macs if they had a single central management system for both Windows PCs and Macs. Unbabel is new online translation service
Unbabel is a new kind of online translation service that "provides human quality translation at one-fifth the going rate." Unbabel also has released a REST-based API [application programming interface] with which companies can integrate translation directly into their workflow. EA server compromised in effort to steal Apple IDs
Hackers have targeted Electronic Arts (EA), the company behind Titanfall, FIFA 14 and Battlefield 4, to try and steal your Apple ID and credit card details by hacking into an EA server and hosting a phishing site, according to NetCraft, a security company. In a blog post (http://tinyurl.com/obuv3l4), NetCraft says compromised server is used by two websites in the ea.com domain, and is ordinarily used to host a calendar based on WebCalendar 1.2.0. (Newer versions of the calendar application have fixed the loopholes.) The phishing site attempts to trick a victim into submitting his Apple ID and password. It then presents a second form which asks the victim to verify his full name, card number, expiration date, verification code, date of birth, phone number, mother's maiden name, plus other details that would be useful to a fraudster. After submitting these details, the victim is redirected to the legitimate Apple ID website (http://tinyurl.com/3ygyw8d).

Tortuga Team has introduced Braveland 1.0, a turn-based game title for Mac OS X. It's inspired by old-school strategies with a hexagonal battlefield. Print Window for Mac OS X updated to version 5.0
Searchware Solutions has revved Print Window, its window printing utility for Mac OS X, to version 5.0. It's now a fully Cocoa-based application. Version 5.0 also sports a new user interface and faster performance. A drop window has been added so file listings can be initiated via drag and drop. It also adds the ability to save multiple file listing settings. Print Window 5.0 is available in two versions through Searchware Solutions online (http://www.printwindowapp.com). Autodesk announces 2015 3D animation software

CalDigit Thunderbolt Station gets added functionality
CalDigit says its CalDigit Thunderbolt Station now has extra functionality. It can now fully charge iOS devices such as iPads and iPhones. What's more, the CalDigit Thunderbolt Station is now fully capable of powering the Apple SuperDrive CD drive. The majority of other Thunderbolt expansion docks aren't capable of powering this device, says Kosta Panagos of CalDigit. UK court grants Samsung's delay appeal
A UK court decision over whether European patents owned by Samsung are valid and have been infringed by Apple has been delayed until other proceedings before the European Patent Office have been concluded, reports "The Register" (http://tinyurl.com/ofkew2h). The Court of Appeal granted Samsung's application for a stay of the UK proceedings until the EPO [European Patent Office] decides whether the South Korean mobile device manufacturer can amend the claims of its patents. Samsung said it had applied to amend the claims of its patents before the EPO to take account of judgments issued in a number of countries in which Samsung and Apple are in dispute over the patents, which include Germany and France. However, Apple said Samsung should be forced to choose between pursuing its appeal against a previous High Court ruling in their dispute or continuing with its application to amend the patent claims before the EPO. Apple has announced that the iPad with Retina display replaces iPad 2 as the most affordable 9.7-inch iPad at US$399 for the 16GB Wi-Fi model and $529 for the Wi-Fi + Cellular model. The fourth generation iPad features an 9.7-inch Retina display, the Apple-designed A6X chip, Wi-Fi, a 5MP iSight camera which also captures 1080p HD video, a FaceTime HD camera, support for LTE carriers worldwide, and up to 10 hours of battery life. The Khronos Group has released the OpenGL ES 3.1 specification, bringing functionality enhancements to the industry-leading, royalty-free 3D graphics API [application programming interface] that is used on nearly all of the world’s mobile devices.
