The new version of SpotOff allows a user to control not only meta data server (mds) problems associated with Spotlight, but those associated with Time Machine as well. In addition, the original Spot-O-Meter has been re-vamped and comes in both a standard sized version, as well as a new "mini" version. SpotOff 2 with Spot-O-Meter 2 and Spot-O-Meter Mini cost $10.95 each. Both versions of Spot-O-Meter can be downloaded from the company's web site (http://www.scsc-online.com) without SpotOff at no cost. Apple seeks ban once more for U.S. ban on Samsung products
Apple filed a motion on Thursday to renew its effort to stop sales of Samsung products that it says infringes on three of its patents, reports "FOSS Patents" (http://tinyurl.com/k6d5t47). On Nov. 18, 2013 the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit revived Apple's bid for a permanent patent injunction against Samsung's Android-based devices with respect to three multitouch software patents, while affirming Judge Lucy Koh's denial of injunctive relief with respect to the asserted design patents. "FOSS Patents" notes that Samsung could have tried to delay the process through a petition for a rehearing, but didn't. As a result, the Federal Circuit yesterday (December 26, 2013) issued the formal mandate to the United States District Court for the Northern District of California (Judge Koh's court). On the same Apple brought a renewed motion for a permanent injunction, requesting that another injunction hearing be held as early as Jan. 30, 2014.

Political scandal in Turkey could sour iPad, Apple store deals
A growing political scandal in Turkey threatens to involve the country’s prime minister, a "key player in a program to purchase $4 billion worth of iPads for thousands of schools, which in turn was a major motive for Apple’s plans to open a retail store in the country early next year, reports "ifo Apple Store." Three ministers resigned Christmas night in the face of corruption allegations. They called on prime minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan to also resign. If Erdogan does leave office, it could put the iPad deal in jeopardy, and leave the nearly-finished and high-profile Apple store with fewer customers. Read more at http://tinyurl.com/my7zbm3 .

Apple accused of iPhone pricing interference in Taiwan
Apple has been fined NT$20 million (US$670,000) fine by Taiwan’s Fair Trade Commission (FTC) for interfering with pricing procedures carried out by mobile service providers and mobile phone distributors, reports "The Wall Street Journal" (http://tinyurl.com/meyl3k3) The company has also been ordered to stop interfering with mobile service providers and handset distributors' pricing, the article adds. Apple can appeal, but may get slapped with the fine if it doesn't comply. The FTC said that, after examining email correspondence between the iPhone maker and the Taiwanese mobile companies, they "discovered the companies submit their pricing plans to Apple to be approved or confirmed before the products hit the market." The ruling doesn’t apply to other Apple products, such as the iPad.

Passware enhances FileVault2 decryption on Mac OS X
Passware — a provider of password recovery, decryption, and electronic evidence discovery software for computer forensics, law enforcement organizations, government agencies, and private investigators — has announces the addition of a hardware-accelerated FileVault2 password recovery option to its disk decryption feature in Passware Kit Forensic, originally released in 2012.   Passware’s previous solution relied on memory analysis for extraction of FileVault2 encryption key. While the decryption process was a matter of minutes, in many cases it was unavailable to computer forensics, because often the target Mac was shut down making the encryption keys no longer available in the memory. Passware adds the new option in response to increased demand on Mac forensics, says CEO Dmitry Sumin.   Now Passware offers a brute-force recovery of the FileVault2 password that works with the disks images, regardless of whether the computer is still running or not. Acceleration of Passware’s password...
